Two remarkable and unexpected discoveries were unearthed in North Carolina during an extensive cleanup effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, The New York Post reported.
After the storm made landfall in September 2024, officials drained most of the Lake Lure reservoir, in the process revealing parts of the lake which hadn’t been exposed since the 1920s. To the astonishment of all involved, resting at the bottom of the reservoir were a 1920s-era Model T Ford as well as a wooden boat, measuring 32 feet long, which was likely used as a water taxi several decades later.
“This is the first time the lake has been this low since it was first filled nearly a century ago,” explained Jake Mohl, the owner of Lake Lure Dock Company. “We’ve worked on this lake for decades, and we’re seeing things no one’s laid eyes on in generations.” Mohl believes that the vessel “likely broke free during a storm and sank sometime after the Great Depression.”
The boat’s name, “Pooh Bear,” is still visible emblazoned on the side. It reportedly belonged to the Tanner family, who were one of the first families to establish the area. As for the Model T, local history buffs posit that the vehicle was left in the lakebed after encountering mechanical issues and was submerged when the reservoir was filled in 1927…
