SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Faith leaders gathered outside the federal courthouse in downtown San Diego on Friday to commemorate World Refugee Day and protest recent immigration enforcement targeting people who were attending hearings tied to their asylum claims.
Bishop Michael Pham, who was recently appointed to lead the Catholic Diocese of San Diego by Pope Leo XIV, was among the delegation to visit the courthouse, providing witness and support for those showing up to make their cases heard before a judge.
A refugee from Vietnam himself, the bishop said he felt compelled to speak out against the treatment of those looking for a better life by creating roots in the U.S.
