Two popular beach spots along the southern coast of Lake Erie were designated as zones of high E. coli contamination, and swimmers were advised against swimming in the water this weekend.
Edgewater and Villa Angela Beach, both of which are located on the edge of Cleveland, Ohio, both presented an E. coli measurement reading higher than their threshold, which led officials with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to issue the warnings.
While both beaches remain open over the weekend, visitors have been notified that swimming could lead to contact with the potentially deadly bacteria. Children, the elderly and those with health concerns are especially cautioned against swimming, according to the NEORSD.
The NEORSD uses the Nowcast system to collect data on contaminated water, which uses rainfall and wind direction to predict the water quality in lakes. This weekend’s prediction found poor water quality in the southern Lake Erie region…
