GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Residents in Gibson County are diving into its rich history. The Lyles Station Museum in Princeton hosted its annual Juneteenth celebration — commemorating the day over 200,000 slaves were declared free by the United States Army.
Dozens gathered for the annual event and were treated to a historical performance by the Freetown Village Singers — an Indianapolis-based vocal group.
For Historic Preservation President Stanley Madison, this holiday represents a time when not only African-Americans, but all cultures were freed from slavery. He says ever since it became a federal holiday, he hopes to see more people be able to experience the festivities that come with it…
