TEMPERANCE, Mich. — On Saturday, June 12, deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Bedford Township and found two people dead. An investigation by authorities revealed that Gwendolyn Smith, 17, was shot and killed by Ryne Leist, 33, who then shot and killed himself. Leist was reportedly a volunteer or coach for the Bedford High School bowling team, to which Smith was a member of. It is unclear what role Leist actually held.
Sheriff Troy Goodenough said Leist was not employed by the Bedford School District, but rather was a “volunteer” through Forest View Lanes, a recreation center off of Dean Road in Temperance.
Despite this, numerous photos began circulating on social media of the Bedford High School 2024-25 yearbook, which showed Leist labeled as “Coach Ryan” next to the rest of the high school’s bowling team, including Smith…
