Austin Mourns 44th Traffic Fatality of the Year: Pedestrian Killed on Menchaca Road

The streets of Austin bore witness to a somber scene on Wednesday night as the city recorded its 44th fatal crash of the year. At approximately 9:48 p.m., officers from the Austin Police Department arrived at the 11100 block of Menchaca Road to find a pedestrian, identified as Nolen Peranton, struck by a motor vehicle. The City of Austin’s official news release stated that Peranton was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the investigation details provided by the APD, the driver involved in the incident was not impaired and has cooperated fully with officials. With grief marking the proceedings, the loss of young life stands in stark contrast to the evening’s quotidian flow. The journey from schoolyard to the safety of the home was tragically cut short for Peranton, a chilling reminder of the fragility threaded through the fabric of daily existence.

As the city’s fatality count climbs to 48 this year, comparison to last year’s statistics highlights an unsettling trend. By this same date in 2024, there had been 34 fatal crashes resulting in 35 deaths, pointing to an upward curve in traffic-related fatalities. The APD urges anyone with information about the crash to reach out and contact the Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111 or to submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program…
