Man riding bicycle on East Bay highway median killed in crash, CHP says

A 43-year-old homeless man riding a bicycle along a center median on a Newark highway was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. on eastbound Highway 84, just west of Interstate 880. The bicyclist was headed west, against traffic, when traffic came to a sudden stop for unknown reasons, the California Highway Patrol said.

As a result of the abrupt stop in traffic, a driver veered toward the center median to avoid crashing into another car, causing the driver to crash head on into the bicyclist, the CHP said…
