Making bread and business from scratch: Kern County moms share their love for sourdough bread

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — From the pandemic to TikTok, to Kern County kitchens sourdough is having a moment; or maybe at this point we should call it a movement.

Sarah Foltin of Flour and Salt Bakehouse, Katie Hill, owner of Bread and Board, and Layne Bone, of Layne’s Sourdough Co. are making business and bread, from scratch.

They’re all moms who got started by baking for friends and family.

“Before I knew it friends and family were asking if I would make it for their holidays or their get-togethers. So slowly but surely it kind of grew into something where I knew I needed to get my license to be able to sell it,” said Sarah. “It’s been fulfilling to have something that it feels like I have ownership in, but I still get to have time with my husband and my kids and go to their activities, and I can structure the baking around family life instead of work being the priority.”…
