The Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center overhaul begins: What to know

Knox County Commissioners will vote June 23 whether to temporarily move the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center under the oversight of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

Half a century of leadership at the detention center was upended May 29 when Richard Bean, the center’s longtime superintendent, fired a whistleblower who had sounded alarms about medical malfeasance and his “archaic” methods of running the place.

Bean was forced out of his role shortly after. He’ll retire Aug. 1, leaving the future in flux for the 120-bed detention center named after him…
