Damascus Church Bombing: Arrests Made

Syrian authorities have announced arrests following a devastating suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Church in Dweil’a, outside Damascus, on Sunday. The attack, which occurred during prayer services, claimed the lives of at least 25 people and injured 63 others. The assailant reportedly opened fire on worshippers before detonating explosives.

The Interior Ministry confirmed the arrests of several individuals connected to the attack, stating the operation targeted locations linked to Islamic State (ISIS) cells. Explosive devices and a booby-trapped motorcycle were also recovered during a security operation near Damascus targeting ISIS-affiliated groups.

While no group immediately claimed responsibility, Interior Ministry spokesman Noureddine Al-Baba pointed to ISIS as a likely perpetrator following a preliminary investigation. He emphasized the sanctity of places of worship and condemned both ISIS and remnants of the former Assad regime for their destabilizing actions.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa vowed that authorities would relentlessly pursue all those involved in planning and executing the attack. He stressed the importance of national unity in confronting threats to the country’s security and stability.

This attack comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, following recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and similar actions by Israel in previous weeks, including attacks on Tehran.
