It’s that time of year — the 72nd Manchester Annual Chicken Broil is headed our way, with its trademark white boxes filled with 1/2 chicken, a bag of chips, radishes, and a dinner roll with butter, on July 19 from 4-8pm, at its original location of Alumni Memorial Field 0n Duncan Street,

Oh, yes … and the coleslaw! Can you just taste its savory-sweet secret recipe? It reportedly can’t be duplicated because it has an exclusive ingredient in it, we’re told, that’s not readily available. It has always been a “secret” recipe, but once it started hitting the church cookbooks (none of them quite the same!), the committee worked out this special tweak so now only a select few actually know the real recipe. Don’t tell … just enjoy it while it’s here!

The Chicken Broil began as a fundraiser to make a fence around Alumni Field. The date was 1954, and after the fencing was completed a few years later, the committee (and community) was enjoying the new tradition so much they decided to keep raising funds for other community-oriented projects and causes such as the public schools, community parks, library and local civic organizations. This year’s donations will be going towards Manchester Community Schools Athletic Complex and a greenhouse for Klager Elementary School…
