Trains were a highlight of Springfield’s past

In the old days the trains through Springfield was something to be a highlight event of the town.

Anyone in Springfield could hear the train whistle day or night. When the local Chevrolet dealership was started by Mr. Byrum Payne, he got his new cars from a flat bed of a train car when delivered to Springfield. Woolen Mill blankets were delivered from the plant on North Main Street to the train depot for delivery to our troops in war time. Tobacco was carried away by train to all parts of the world from Robertson County.

The train depot was a busy place all hours of the day in Springfield. Our town worked around the schedule of the train. Some people who lived in Springfield rode to their workplace in Nashville on the train every day. Many times, kids would ride their bikes to south Main Street just to watch the trains go by and watch the men hang out the mail bag on a large hook so that the train could catch the bag as they went by without stopping…
