‘Bait ball’ presence grows on Grand Strand beaches as temperatures warm

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — People are beginning to flock to the beaches as temperatures continue to rise — but they aren’t the only ones making their way to shore.

As swimmers enter the water, they might find themselves surrounded by dark patches of water. The reason behind the patches is simple.

“Most of the time it’s mackerel,” Lack’s Beach Service manager Matt Warne said. “They gather in those large groups because they’re so small to make themselves look like bigger animals to prey.”…
