Commenters object to airline’s deportation flights

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Some community members are asking the Gerald R. Ford International Airport to reconsider its relationship with Avelo Airlines, a budget airline that operates federal deportation flights.

In recent weeks, Avelo has started flying out of Ford Airport, offering nonstop routes to airports in North Carolina and Florida.

The airline made headlines earlier this year when it signed an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security to make charter deportation flights from an airport near Phoenix, Arizona. Avelo said it would use three Boeing 737-800 planes for the flights, which would be both domestic and international, according to a report from the Associated Press. The airline started carrying out the flights in May.

A spokesperson for Avelo told News 8 that the airline’s DHS flights “are only based out of AZA in Mesa, Arizona and are not affiliated with our GRR commercial service.”…
