WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Firefighters across Wilmington will now be receiving free early-detection cancer screenings after the city council approved a $6.8 million reallocation from the FY26 city budget.
The funding comes as occupational cancer is one of the leading causes of death for firefighters.
“We are seeing a lot of people across the fire service succumbing at an early age to cancer,” Wilmington Fire Chief Steve Mason said. “We know that’s related to the job.”…
