ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Anchorage Assembly members will hear public testimony Tuesday night on a proposed ordinance that would add criminal penalties for people who sleep or camp in public areas including parks, trails and sidewalks.
Three Assembly members are sponsoring the ordinance including South Anchorage Assembly member Keith McCormick, and Eagle River Assembly members Jared Goecker and Scott Myers. McCormick in particular has taken to social media to promote the ordinance and the need for action.
“Anchorage is in an abusive relationship and like too many victims, we keep making excuses,” McCormick says in the video. “We say it’s complicated, we say things might change, but our parks are overrun, our trails are trashed, our playgrounds aren’t safe, and the city acts like its normal.”…
