Two individuals to be charged in death of 12-year-old, who drowned during school field trip

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A press conference is scheduled for Thursday morning to announce charges against two individuals in connection with the drowning death of 12-year-old Giver Essien, who died during a school field trip in July 2024.

According to officials, the press conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, at the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office in Pittsfield.

Essien, a student at Herberg Middle School, drowned on July 17, 2024, while participating in a field trip organized through the Pittsfield Public Schools’ 21st Century summer program. The outing took place at Beartown State Forest, a popular outdoor destination located in Great Barrington. She was part of a group from the middle school at the time the incident occurred.

An investigation was conducted by the State Police Detective Unit, with assistance from the Great Barrington Police Department.
