Chautauqua County officials say they would welcome nuclear power plant

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In the aftermath of NY Gov. Kathy Hochul’s announcement on Monday that she is supporting an effort to construct a new nuclear power plant in upstate New York, civic leaders from Chautauqua County say they would embrace a plan to locate it at a shuttered, formerly coal fired power plant on the Lake Erie Shore in Dunkirk.

The governor says a nuclear power plant is needed if New York intends to meet its goal of producing all of the state’s electricity with zero emissions by the year 2040.

Despite billions of dollars in state taxpayer subsidies for so-called “green-energy” projects, wind and solar, even when combined, still account for less than 10 percent of the energy generated in New York…
