Man sentenced to 45 years after he tried to kidnap a woman in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man was sentenced to 45 years in prison Wednesday after he assaulted a woman and attempted to kidnap her in 2023.

In May 2025, a jury found James D. Riley guilty of Kidnapping with Serious Physical Injury, Assault in the First Degree (Domestic Violence), Assault in the Second Degree (Domestic Violence), Wanton Endangerment in the Second Degree, and Terroristic Threatening in the Third Degree.

“The jury found that this defendant created a serious, life-threatening situation for the victim in this case, as well as for innocent people on the expressway. The severity of the penalty the jurors recommended reflects this,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers. “The jury advised a penalty of nearly a half-century behind bars. My hope is that this outcome, due to the hard work of our prosecutors, helps bring some justice and healing to the victim.”…
