Albuquerque to hire new positions to restore and protect the bosque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s a first-of-its-kind investment for the Albuquerque bosque, with the city soon to hire full-time staff dedicated to fixing up trails and keeping the city’s urban forest clean. “For many years, we’ve just needed more resources and more people to meet the responsibility of caring for this precious place,” said Dave Simon, Parks and Recreation Director, City of Albuquerque.

That precious place is the Albuquerque bosque and its 16-mile stretch along the Rio Grande. For the first time, the city is now about to hire three people who will focus on managing the beloved and delicate open space. “These new open space employees are gonna be a combination of professional science-based people along with bosque technicians,” said Simon.

It comes as the bosque has been damaged by a handful of fires so far this summer. The new bosque technicians will work on trail clean-up and maintenance, along with monitoring the 4,000-acre forest in the middle of the city. Part of that work is also expected to help plan for clearing out wildfire fuels like dead trees and invasive species…
