Sweeping Changes Coming to U.S. 30: What They Mean for Allen, Whitley, and Kosciusko Counties

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) – A sweeping redesign of U.S. 30 through northeast Indiana could bring major changes to drivers in Allen, Whitley and Kosciusko counties, according to a new long-range planning report released this week by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

The plan, part of INDOT’s ProPEL US 30 initiative, outlines a multi-decade strategy to transform the highway into a high-speed, signal-free corridor. If fully implemented, the redesign would eliminate all traffic lights and at-grade intersections between Valparaiso and the Ohio state line, replacing them with interchanges and overpasses.

According to INDOT’s final Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL) report, the long-term goal is to create a “free-flow” for drivers that improves safety, reduces congestion and supports increasing freight traffic across northern Indiana. While some short-term improvements are already moving forward, full conversion of the highway is not expected before 2045…
