Solvay mail carrier raises awareness on preventing dog bites

SOLVAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — June is Dog Bite Awareness Month, and the United States Postal Service is reminding everyone of the safety risks mail carriers face while on the job.

Last year alone, 6,088 postal employees were attacked by dogs, according to USPS. In the city of Syracuse, six mail carriers were bitten by dogs in 2024. Something a local mail carrier, Bob DeLorenzo, is all too familiar with. After nearly 18 years on the route, he’s been bitten twice.

“I’ve had a couple encounters with dogs. One small dog, one big dog. The small dog bit me on the back of the ankle as soon as I turned away from the house. The big dog came around the side of the house and surprised me and got me on the back of the arm once,” said DeLorenzo…
