One of my favorite parts of a long holiday weekend is camping. There’s nothing better than being in the great outdoors. I love spending my days swimming and soaking up the sun.

If you’re wanting to add a trip to the lake and camping to your plans in Amarillo, you have a couple of options nearby that not only give you both, but will also save you some cash. They’re perfect for your weekend getaway.

Why Lake Meredith Stands Out

First, you have Lake Meredith north of Amarillo. This lake is one of the crown jewels of the Texas Panhandle. You’ll have access to plenty of amenities and enough space to enjoy your favorite lake activities. My favorite thing about Lake Meredith is that camping is mostly free. A majority of the campsites are first-come, first-served. There is no need for reservations, and there aren’t any fees for using these sites.

Some RV sites require a reservation, and they do have a fee. They come with water and electric hook-ups, and can be found at the Sanford-Yake area. You can find out more at the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area website.

Another option is one that has just recently become popular again. Many people in the Texas Panhandle have memories of growing up and visiting this lake, and in recent history, it has been bone-dry. That’s no longer the case thanks to all the rain we’ve gotten this year.

Lake McLellan Is Back

Lake McLellan once again has water in it. Even though it isn’t a tremendous amount, it’s much more than the lake has had in recent years. It’s enough that people are once again excited about returning to Lake McLellan for a weekend in the outdoors…
