SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – 12 Cherokee Nation cyclists just finished a nearly 1,000 mile long bike ride. The ride wrapped up in Oklahoma. It’s called, The Remember the Removal Bike Ride. It recalls, the Trail of Tears.
You’ve probably seen signs for the trail around Springfield. They refer to the forced removal of the Cherokees from the southeastern United States to Oklahoma. It took place in the late 1830’s and it moved across Missouri. Now, a PHD student from the Show Me State has used the newest technology to locate campsites the Cherokee used in Missouri.
“We used drones, with various sensors on it to help locate things,” explained Historical Archeologist Erin Whitson. “We used magnetometry and ground penetrating radar and metal detecting and we sort of layered all these things on top of one another.”…
