West Valley School Board will not renew contract of teacher who said racial slur while reading ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’

SPOKANE, Wash. — On Wednesday, the West Valley School Board voted that it will not renew the teaching contract of a high school Spanish teacher after he read aloud a racial slur from the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” in class.

“It came from a student-initiated question about the book. It was a very thought-provoking question, and as a professional, I felt it was necessary to address,” said the teacher, Matthew Mastronardi, at a small press conference last week.
