The mystery box that has been at the forefront of local news over the past month and especially over the past week will be opened and examined by the Coffee County attorney.
The box allegedly contains contents from late Coffee County Mayor Judd Matheny’s desk. Matheny passed away in spring of 2024 and the contents on his desk were allegedly boxed up by his assistant, Sam Harper, who is no longer with the mayor’s office. The contents were allegedly requested by Coffee County Commissioner Joe Michael Hodge earlier this year. County officials allege that Hodge attempted to lift the box in secret without going through proper channels and have since launched an internal investigation that has led to the resignation of a secretary.
