Patient accused of killing Wendy Gilbreath at Merit Health seeks trial delay. What we know

The defense attorney who represents the man accused of assaulting and murdering 51-year-old Wendy Gilbreath at Merit Health Central in Jackson filed a motion in early June asking for a judge to delay the upcoming trial for his client.

Gilbreath died on March 6, 2024, after being brutally attacked on the sixth floor of the facility, allegedly by another patient she had never met. The Clarion Ledger was the first media outlet to break the news and identify Gilbreath’s alleged perpetrator as David Reed, 36, of Diamondhead. The Hinds County coroner identified Gilbreath as the victim.
