Flames engulf vehicle after Interstate 40 crash in Asheville: 1 killed, road closed

ASHEVILLE – One person died June 26 after a vehicle became engulfed in flames following an accident on Interstate 40 East, according to police.

Asheville Police Department spokesperson Rick Rice told the Citizen Times that officers responded around 2 p.m. to a two-vehicle collision on I-40 East near Milemarker 45 in West Asheville. One vehicle was engulfed in flames, which was extinguished by the Asheville Fire Department, Rice said.

I-40 eastbound has been closed for the investigation and removal of debris, according to Rice. The road was closed after Exit 44 heading east near Smokey Park Highway about 2 p.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation…
