VMFA to temporarily close select galleries as new renovation gets underway

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Some art collections will be taken off display at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) due to construction in the area, starting July 7.

According to a Thursday release from the museum, select galleries will see temporary closures as the city begins construction this fall. Groundbreaking for the museum’s expansion and renovation project is expected to begin by spring 2026 and be completed by late 2028.

“There’s always something to see at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and most of the permanent collection will stay open. The museum will continue to be open 365 days a year, and our robust schedule of programs, events, performances and blockbuster exhibitions will continue while the museum is undergoing expansion and renovation,” said Director and CEO Alex Nyerges…
