Swift Action by LAFD and LAPD Prevents Tragedy on 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights

Last night, a potentially tragic incident was avoided thanks to the swift response of the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles Police Department. At 10:58 PM, emergency services rushed to the scene at 1050 S Lorena Street in Boyle Heights, where, according to an LAFD alert, a man around 30 years of age was on the fence over the northbound 5 Freeway, threatening to jump. Traffic was halted as firefighters positioned themselves below the overpass, ready to deploy their rescue air cushion.

All drivers were advised by authorities to seek alternative routes while the situation was being handled. Standing poised on the overpass, the safety of the man hung in the balance as the emergency crews prepared for any outcome. Deploying the air cushion, a buffer against a potential fall, required precision and calm in an otherwise tumultuous scene.
