First Warn Forecast: First Warn for strong storms Sunday into Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A First Warn is still in effect for Sunday and now extends all the way through 9am Monday due to the potential of strong to severe thunderstorms.

While we already dealt with some storms this morning, another scattered round is possible throughout the early afternoon.

This afternoon round of storms is the deciding factor of how the rest of our day plays out. The newest data is signaling that any afternoon activity will likely fizzle out, then allow us to find some sunshine before we host stronger storms in the overnight hours.

Consequently, the Storm Prediction Center still holds us in a 2/5 risk for strong to severe thunderstorms.

If we do find activity on the stronger side, then damaging winds will be the primary threat, with 60+ mph gusts possible. Heavy rainfall will also arrive with these thunderstorms, and small hail is not out of the question.

These risks will remain on the table all the way through the Monday morning commute, which is why the First Warn is now extended.

In terms of planning your Sunday, it’s a good idea to keep any plans incredibly flexible, and anticipate that storms will likely impact outdoor festivities. When Monday rolls around, know that you will need some extra time out the door as you will likely encounter strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall on the roads…
