Mamdani Declares Billionaires Shouldn’t Exist, Wins NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary
In a stunning upset, Zohran Mamdani has secured the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The victory marks a significant win for the progressive wing of the Democratic party. Mamdani, a self-described socialist, garnered endorsements from prominent figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Mamdani stated his belief that billionaires shouldn’t exist, citing vast income inequality. He clarified, however, that he looks forward to collaborating with everyone, including billionaires, to create a fairer city.
Cuomo conceded the race, acknowledging Mamdani’s deserved victory. While his future plans remain unclear, Cuomo hinted at a potential independent run in November.
Mamdani’s potential win in the general election would make him the first Muslim and Asian mayor of New York City. The 33-year-old State Assembly member has campaigned on a platform focused on working-class issues, including affordable housing, free childcare, and a higher minimum wage.
Former President Donald Trump criticized Mamdani on social media, labeling him a “Communist Lunatic” and expressing concern over what he perceives as a radical leftward shift in the Democratic party. Trump also criticized Mamdani’s appearance, intelligence, and supporters.
