Albuquerque boxers celebrate reopening of Jack Candelaria Community Center

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – One of Albuquerque’s most iconic boxing gyms is once again open. The city unveiled the newly renovated Jack Candelaria Community Center and Boxing Training Facility on Saturday.

The facility, which has been around since the 1980s, closed in 2023. It was once the home for some of Albuquerque’s most renowned boxers, including Johnny Tapia and Danny Romero.

The renovations totaling around $5 million include around 4,000 square feet of event space for a new boxing ring, free weights, a Smith machine, cardio machines, a universal circuit area, a computer lab, and a multi-purpose room. There is also boxing memorabilia and artwork that pays homage to the city’s history in the sport.
