- ‘Pawn Stars’ boss Rick Harrison buys Secret Service memorabilia after asking expert if it was legal (marketrealist.com)
“Pawn Stars” viewers know the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop sees its fair share of unusual items. But a recent episode featuring Secret Service memorabilia had even Rick Harrison proceeding with caution.
A seller named Mike brought in a collection that once belonged to former Attorney General J. Howard McGrath, including a Secret Service ID, White House pass, letters, and half of a $10 bill signed by McGrath. Mike explained he acquired the items from McGrath’s grandson.
Harrison, intrigued but wary, questioned the authenticity and legality of the items, particularly the half bill. Suspecting it was counterfeit, he consulted his expert, Clark County Museum Administrator Mark.
Mark confirmed the Secret Service credentials were genuine and remarkably well-preserved, noting most such passes are marked or damaged. He also confirmed the $10 bill was indeed counterfeit, advising Mike to return it to the Secret Service. He acknowledged the rarity and collectibility of the other items, but cautioned they might be difficult to resell.
Despite the legal tightrope walk, Harrison saw an opportunity. After some negotiation, he purchased the collection (minus the counterfeit bill) from Mike for $500.
“These Secret Service credentials are amazing,” Harrison later commented. “Even though McGrath isn’t a household name, collectors love this kind of stuff.”
