Matunuck Oyster Bar celebrates soft reopening with help from new Rhode Island law

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — After six weeks out of operation, Matunuck Oyster Bar marked a major milestone Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new tented dining area.

Staff and community members gathered to celebrate the soft opening, which coincided with Gov. Dan McKee’s ceremonial signing of the “Take It Outside” bill into law. The legislation allows the restaurant to temporarily operate across the street as it continues to rebuild from a devastating fire.

Matunuck Oyster Bar was destroyed by a fire in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 20.

Despite his initial skepticism, owner Perry Raso said the tented dining setup has exceeded expectations.
