Track & Field and lacrosse events pack Midwest athletes into Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Summer is here, and so are athletes. Thousands of them from around the Midwest have converged on Rockford and Loves Park this weekend for two major events. One is the AAU Track & Field Regional Qualifier at Auburn High School. It was held Saturday. 51 teams competed with more than 1300 athletes of all ages. The top ones qualified for the AAU Nationals in Houston later this summer.The Rockford FIRE Track & Field Team had several athletes in action. One was 13-year-old James Wright of Eisenhower Middle School. Wright won the 200meter dash and then proudly showed it off to us.The other major sports event played out at Mercyhealth Sportscore Two in Loves Park. This one was a lacrosse tournament. The Rockford Park District hosted the Team Illinois Summer Invitational and Showcase. More than 265 teams were involved from 12 states. Youth athletes through high school age competed.
