Man sentenced to 25-years-to-life for killing EMT outside Astoria stationhouse

The man convicted earlier this year of killing a longtime FDNY emergency medical technician has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, officials said.

Alison Russo-Elling was killed just outside her Astoria, Queens stationhouse on Sept. 29, 2022. Peter Zisopoulos, 37, was found guilty of second-degree murder and criminal weapons possession in May. The Queens District Attorney’s office has said Russo, who was 61 and a 24-year veteran of the FDNY, was in uniform and on-duty when Zisopoulos charged at her on 41st Street, shoved her to the ground and repeatedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife.

“Alison Russo [Elling] was the best of the best: a longtime public servant and friend who has been missed every single day since her senseless murder in 2022,” FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said in a statement following the sentencing Monday. “Today, we are appreciative that her killer has been sentenced to the maximum punishment.”…
