Pilot died at airport next to his home in aircraft he had built from kit

ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The pilot who died in a plane crash on Sunday at a small airport in Ottawa County lived along the air strip and had built the experimental aircraft from a kit.

Ottawa Executive Airport officials and neighbors identified him as Robert Fidler, 80.

“He was a very accomplished sailplane (glider) pilot and had a lot of experience,” said former neighbor Gary Moshluk. “The airplane may have been new but his pilot skills as they were were damn good.”

In a phone interview, Moshluk said he and Fidler both built their own Lancair 360 aircrafts from kits in their neighboring hangars…
