Man charged with 1st-degree murder of Cherokee County officer makes court appearance

BRYSON CITY, N.C. (WLOS) — A man charged with first-degree murder of a Cherokee Detention Center officer made a court appearance on July 1 in Swain County Superior Court, via a video call from the Buncombe County Detention Facility in Asheville, where he’s being detained.

Superior Court Judge Donna Forga explained the charges to Kelvin Wayne Simmons, who was arrested on June 30 following a multi-county chase.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office charged Simmons with first-degree murder after it was reported by the sheriff’s office that Simmons shot and killed Cherokee Detention Center Officer Francisco Flattes…
