MAYFIELD, Ky. — Graves County officials have struggled to compensate for the loss of the county jail in the December 2021 tornado. While considering security concerns and fiscal responsibility to taxpayers, the Graves County Fiscal Court has entered an agreement with Christian County jail to house inmates.
“The savings to the county will be immense,” a news release from the fiscal court read. “By saving on transport, housing and personnel, the county will save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Money that can be utilized for infrastructure, law enforcement, economic development and so on.”
Without a jail, Graves County previously had to transport inmates to other facilities across western Kentucky, which is very costly, and an imposition on law enforcement for destinations up to four hours away.
