Rescue mission in remote and rugged Colorado terrain highlights ‘must-not-ignore’ risk

An overnight rescue scenario took place in a remote part of Colorado’s Larimer County in recent days, highlighting a key risk of exploring the state’s natural terrain.

According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, a call for help was received from a Garmin device located deep in Northern Colorado’s Rawah Wilderness at about 7 p.m. last Saturday. The rescue patient was described as a young adult who had started to experience symptoms of altitude sickness and was having a difficult time breathing.

Rescue crews were activated and a UCHealth LifeLine helicopter responded. Unfortunately, due to the elevation of the mission coupled with the patient’s height and weight, this helicopter was unable to transport the patient from the scene. This helicopter still played a role in the rescue, however, transporting a tactical rescue paramedic to the area…
