Landlords oppose ‘good cause eviction’ law proposal in Schenectady

Schenectady, NY (WRGB) — Landlords in Schenectady are voicing opposition to a proposal to adopt New York State’s “good cause eviction” law, which the city council is currently debating. The law, passed in 2024, aims to protect tenants from unreasonable evictions and rent hikes. Landlords argue it could complicate evictions of problematic tenants who force neighbors to move out, endangering the livelihoods of landlords.

“Landlords want tenants. They don’t want to do evictions.” said Chris Morris, director of Schenectady Landlords Influencing Change or SLIC. “Evictions have become extremely expensive; you can’t do it yourself. There is no business without tenants.”
