Speeding driver charged after striking, killing electric scooter rider, officials say

A speeding driver has been charged with vehicular homicide after striking and killing a woman crossing a Newark intersection on an electric scooter last week.

Paulo A. Gomes, Jr. hit the 35-year-old woman when he drove through a red light at about 1:10 p.m. Thursday, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.
