“It’s scary”: Wilmington food bank fears potential federal SNAP cuts

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Emily Kraft, the Director of Community Outreach at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Wilmington, knows how federally funded money can help keep stomachs full.

“North Carolina Food banks have provided 250 million meals a year and for SNAP, and SNAP provides 9 times as many meals, and we as an organization are able to provide,” Kraft said. “So that is why we, as a food bank, invest in also helping people access SNAP.”

SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, supports 1.4 million people across North Carolina. That number also includes 500,000 kids who qualify for free school meals…
