Man involved in deadly SWAT standoff in Albuquerque found competent for trial

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The man involved in a SWAT stand-off that led to a teen’s death has been found competent to stand trial. Qiaunt Kelley was wanted for a murder and a second shooting in 2022 when he and 15-year-old Brett Rosenau barricaded themselves in a home near Zuni Rd. and Wyoming Blvd.

At one point, police deployed a gas canister in the home, sparking a fire. Rosenau died from smoke inhalation. Kelley’s case was put on hold because of questions about his competency. The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office told KRQE News 13 that Kelley was found competent during a hearing Tuesday morning and the case is now moving forward.
