Princess Kate Opens Up About “Really Difficult” Post-Chemo Period

In her first public appearance in two weeks, Catherine, Princess of Wales, spoke candidly about the challenges of life after chemotherapy. During a visit to Colchester Hospital’s wellbeing garden, she connected with patients, sharing her own experiences.

“You put on a brave face during treatment,” she remarked, “but the aftermath is really difficult. You’re no longer under the clinical team, but you’re not able to function normally at home.”

The Princess’s visit highlighted the therapeutic benefits of nature. Kensington Palace noted the visit celebrated “the incredible healing power of nature” and allowed the Princess to learn how gardens in healthcare settings can improve patient outcomes and recovery time.

This theme echoes sentiments shared by the Princess in May, when she described nature as her “sanctuary” during the past year. Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy last March, subsequently stepping back from public life. After announcing the completion of her treatment in September, she has gradually returned to royal duties, striving for a healthy balance.

Wednesday’s visit coincided with a donation of 50 “Catherine’s Rose” plants to the hospital. This specially bred rose, named in the Princess’s honor, will benefit The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, an organization close to her heart.

The Princess herself planted some of the roses in the hospital’s garden. Proceeds from the sale of the rose will fund a program to help cancer patients live well with and after their disease.

Kate became joint patron of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where she received treatment, earlier this year.
