‘Everybody feels really strongly’ | East Tennessee districts weighing new policies as new cell phone ban hits schools

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – A new law is requiring Tennessee school districts to decide how they’ll limit cell phones during the school day.

HB932/SB897 says cell phones aren’t to be used during classroom instruction, unless it’s under certain circumstances. It leaves the window open for districts to decide how much access students have to their personal devices outside of that class time.

Hamblen County Schools implemented an all-out ban on phones in April 2024. Students are expected to power off and store their phones away for the entire school day. After more than a full school year in place, Superintendent Arnold Bunch said the impacts are clear…
