Parents join Gov. Beshear’s call for universal pre-K

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Natalie Gwishiri, Kentucky educator and parent of two children, said after coming from North Carolina—which offers universal pre-K, said the difference in educational standards between the two states is apparent.

“At my child’s school—he goes to Collins Lane—60% of kids who are tested are not reading on grade level,” she said. “It’s about 46% of math that are not on grade level.” Gwishiri added, “What are our kids doing? Are we OK with 60% of our tested children not reading on grade level?”

Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., launched “Pre-K for All” in June, his initiative to bring universal pre-K to the state. A release from Beshear’s office said according to KY Stats, 53.8% of Kentucky children are unprepared for their first day of kindergarten…
