Juror absences force delay in Flores felony trial

The felony trial of Stockton Unified School District board member AngelAnn Flores was unexpectedly paused Tuesday after two jurors reported illness, prompting Judge Richard Mallett to cancel proceedings in Department 6D of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.

Flores faces three felony charges—embezzlement of public funds, misuse of a district-issued credit card, and filing a false insurance claim—and has pleaded not guilty. Her defense contends the case is politically motivated, citing her prior cooperation in a federal probe of the district’s contracting and financial practices.

Earlier in the morning, two prosecution witnesses—Christina Alejo, executive assistant to the superintendent, and Traci Miller, former interim superintendent—were present and prepared to testify before the delay. Both were formally excused for the day and are expected to return once the trial resumes.

Miller, who served as interim superintendent from August 2022 to July 2023, is anticipated to provide testimony regarding the district’s financial oversight and enforcement of credit-card policies.
