Dining out can pose a risk to you and your family’s health, if you choose the wrong restaurant. Some restaurants do not seem to care about their patrons’ health. Thankfully, we have health code inspectors who take on the job of checking to make sure each restaurant and other non-food spots that prepare food, like schools and jails, meet certain safety standards. That’s why I put together a list of the results of Monroe County’s health code inspections in June.
Some restaurants receive non-critical violations, such as “Food not protected during storage, preparation, display, transportation and service, from potential sources of contamination (e.g., food uncovered, mislabeled, stored on floor, missing or inadequate sneeze guards, food containers double stacked)” or critical violations, such as “Potentially hazardous foods such as salads prepared from potatoes or macaroni are not prepared as recommended using prechilled ingredients and not prechilled to 45°F or less as recommended before they are stored on buffet lines.” Restaurants should definitely prioritize the health of their customers. No one wants to go out to dinner with their family and end up sick or, worse, in the hospital.
The Centers For Disease Control says there are 31 pathogens known to cause foodborne illnesses that could harm you or your family. Approximately 37.2 million Americans suffer from food-related illnesses each year. Of those, 228,744 people end up in the hospital due to their foodborne illnesses, and 2,612 die annually.
While 41 restaurants did not have health code violations in June, plenty did. You can view the results of all health code inspections for June here.
